Sing to the Moon: A Full Moon Cocktail

Boy, oh, boy–did anyone else see this month’s full moon? There were quite a few special things about it. For one, it was a super moon, meaning that the moon appears larger because of its distance to the Earth. It was also a Blood Moon because of the lunar eclipse that occurred, giving the moon a reddish hue.

I’m learning a lot about the moon and its cycles right now, and I love having any good enough reason to celebrate. Full moons, by nature, are all about celebrating. It’s a great time to release the things that no longer serve you, and clean (mentally, physically, spiritually, what-have-you). And in the name of saying “Bye, Felicia” to some limiting beliefs and negative energies, I decided to celebrate with a cocktail just for this January full moon. It’s made with a fresh blackberry coulis (a fancy word for fruit puree), vodka, and club soda. For good measure, I also plopped in an ice sphere. I probably made WAY more coulis than is reasonably necessary, but hey, I got to have this cocktail again today and it was just as good. My husband had gotten me a beautiful coupe glass with little engraved stars — it’s gorgeous and makes me smile every time I use it. For this kind of cocktail, you can use whatever you’ve got around as far as I’m concerned.

Recipe:

Coulis:

  • 1 pint of blackberries
  • 1 capful of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water

Cocktail:

  • 1/4 cup blackberry coulis
  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz Chambord liqueur
  • A squeeze of fresh lime juice
  • Ice
  • Club Soda

Instructions:

Start by making the coulis. In a small saucepan, bring the blackberries, sugar, and water to a boil. Turn the temperature down to low and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract. Allow to cool. Blend (I used an immersion blender) and then strain through a sieve. Toss the seeds and pulp.

In a cocktail shaker, add the blackberry coulis, vodka, Chambord and lime juice, and some ice. Shake vigorously. Pour in a glass and top with some club soda.

Cheers!
